Level 4 Diploma

in Therapeutic Counselling

 Accredited by ABC Awards the Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic

 Counselling  is concerned with the training of counsellors to a

 professional level of competency. The diploma includes a 100

 hour placement and successful completion of the course

 allows you to provide therapeutic counselling using the

 Psycho-dynamic approach. 

 The Level 4 diploma is a entry requirement onto the Diploma in Casework Supervision





































  • Provides experiential learning with practice under qualified supervision working towards becoming a skilled and       reflective counsellor.



  • Provides learners with the knowledge of and competence in the professional and organisational issues that are        integral part of being a counsellor.



  • To gain understanding of the cultural divisions within the society and how they affect the one to one counselling      interaction.



  • Learn competent and effective use of counselling skills which can be practiced and developed throughout a 100        hour counselling placement.



  • Achieve and demonstrate evidence of personal growth and self awareness.


  • Develops understanding and knowledge of Psychodynamic Object Relations Model that underpins the counsellors     way of working with the clients.


  • For the learner to grow professionally, working ethically and within accordance to the ethical code of the BACP.





  Weekend non residential workshops

  are an integral part of the diploma. They

  are run at 54 Hamilton Square 9.30-4pm

  Sat and Sun on dates confirmed whilst on the

  course. Topics covered are;

Unit 1:            Professional Organisational Issues in Counselling


  • Confidentiality and Legal Issues

  • B.A.C.P Code of Ethics and Practice

  • Counselling in a Medical Setting

  • Auditing clients

  • Working within other organisations within a team setting

  • Health and safety issues 


Unit 2:           Counselling in a Diverse Society


  • Cultural divisions within society 

  • Power issues in counselling and in society

  • Explore family patterns within society

  • External and internal factors that can affect family life

  • Different belief systems 

Unit 3:            Counselling Theory


  • Psycho-dynamic theoretical approach to counselling

  • Object Relations Therapy

  • Knowledge of  Person Centred  Theory

  • Knowledge of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

  • Knowledge of Neuro Linguistic Programming 

  • Knowledge of Transactional Analysis

  • Understanding Transference and Counter-Transference

  • Understanding a relational approach to counselling


Unit 4:          Advanced Counselling Skills


  • Expanding on skills learnt on Certificate Course

  • Skills for couple counselling

  • Case Management


Unit 5:          Self Awareness for Counsellors   


  • Structured exercises to raise self awareness

  • Evaluating personal growth

  • Evaluate strengths and weaknesses as a counsellor

  • Johari Window


Unit 6:         Research Methodologies in Counselling


  • Research methods

  • Group presentations


Unit 7:         Counselling Placement


  • Includes minimum of 100 counselling hours at a work placement






There is no examination for this qualification however sucessful completion of 100 hour supervised

counselling practice is required alongside a supporting placement portfolio of work, 6 essays one of

which includes a research project.





* Students must be 21 years or over.


* Successful completion of a Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Skills

  confirmed by references.


* An interview with Tutor to ascertain candidates

   capabilities to meet course demands.


* Understanding the need to be responsible for own personal development

£1800 per year, £1850 per year if paying by monthly installments

*Incs 100 Hours Counselling Practice within a suitable Counselling Agency
